Push mail for iPhone with Cyrus and z-push

Some days ago I came across z-push a very interesting open source project. I decided to give it a try and see how it works with my iPhone.
I really didn’t expect to be up and running in only 5 minutes! So I won’t write anything here about the installation, just read the manual and everything should be clear.
But there are two things I have to mention if you are using Cyrus.

  • Synced mails will be marked as read! The solution for this is in this post in the z-push forum
  • Sync might not work due to encoding problems (iPhone will say that there is no connection to the server). The solution for this is in this post in the z-push forum.

After solving these two issues everything worked perfect! The only problem that remains, and this is nothing z-push can solve, is the battery usage of the iPhone. Be warned! Your battery will be empty after 2 days in some cases even after 1 day. This really sucks, I have to admit, this is where BlackBerry will get a point.

Clack, Clack, Clack - noises you don’t want to hear from your hard drive

This is pretty long story, don’t know quite where I should start.

Let’s start with monday. It started as a normal monday and then some minor issues appeared, a bit of stress but all in all rather a normal Monday. Ok, Tuesday already started a bit worse and then … Internet connection is gone. We try to call the Provider (Optima in Kiev, hands of this provider! Really! but this is a different story). As usual no answer from Optima.
Then it came to my mind that there where some road works around the corner and said “can it be that they destroyed the phone lines?” Well, unfortunately I was right! They destroyed ALL phone lines and Internet lines, a gas pipe and also electricity, although I don’t understand how they did that since I was expecting that electricity lines are above the ground, but I don’t have to understand everything.
Now without internet of course I had so many things where I just needed a quick patch or something I could only get via internet. This went like this all week and each day brought new problems and I needed Internet more and more. But for larger things I could still download them at home and bring them to work with me.

Weekend, finally weekend. After a quite stressful week it was time to relax a bit, watch a movie and half way into the movie my MacBook just froze.
WTF? What is happening, no way to get my MacBook to react so I shut it down and tried to start it again. Well … I didn’t really expect any problems but as it seems my bad luck wasn’t over since my MacBook refused to start. I tried a second time and then … this noise …. this “clack - clack - clack”.
Well, what do you think, my hard drive is dead! I hear you say Backup? Well, I do have a good backup (thanks to Time Machine) but the problem is that my backup was made on my fileserver at home, in Vienna and we are currently still in Kiev, so copying 47 Gig over the internet is quite the best solution.
I tried! Really, the download was very fast, 1.2MB/s but unfortunately I have a download limit, what I didn’t know and this resulted in no internet at home! So now, no Internet at home, no Internet at work and a dead hard disk. What I did manage to download though was my Leopard Disk Image (from my purchased Leopard DVD). So what now? The fastest solution was to buy a external hard disk but I didn’t find one with firewire so I got a USB version, with a bad feeling since I wasn’t 100% sure it would boot from USB. Apple never claimed officially that it does (at least that’s what I read) but … it works! It works great actually.

So now I have a naked Mac OS Leopard and no internet, still not quite optimal, but after one day, the internet in the apartment was payed and stupid me tried to download the backup again, since I still didn’t know about my limit and initially though the company owning the apartment just forgot to pay. Well the result was once again no internet, for one day so I had to give up the idea of downloading my backup, I have to restore when we are back home, which is pretty soon.

But, this isn’t the end of my story, meanwhile a week has passed and we still had no internet at work! It is really incredible what “I don’t give a shit” mentality Optima has!
Finally, after 1 week and one day we had internet again, but only for about an hour, since after that hour they blocked our internet, because we had to “charge” our account! Incredible, after leaving us offline for over a week they have the guts to block our access because of payment.
This is pretty complicated in Ukraine as I have noticed. Almost everything is prepaid here. It’s pretty strange to get used to it, especially if you are working with big companies (Kyivstar, Volia Cable, Optima etc) and pay them monthly huge amounts, that you still have to prepay the use their service.

So in conclusion, get yourself some small external disks where you can do your backups, and have the backup on the fileserver as second backup, in case your laptop gets stolen which probably means that they have also stolen your external disk!

How to solve undefined method `ruby_version’ for Gem:Module (NoMethodError) on OS X

After updating ruby and rb-rubygems with macport I got this error when trying to execute gem:
/opt/local/bin/gem:14: undefined method `ruby_version’ for Gem:Module (NoMethodError)
To solve this issue, edit /opt/local/bin/gem and remove these three lines (just comment them out)

unless required_version.satisfied_by? Gem.ruby_version then
abort “Expected Ruby Version #{required_version}, was #{Gem.ruby_version}”
end

then download rubygems-update-1.2.0.gem and install it.

gem install -l rubygems-update-1.2.0.gem
after the installation is done, start the update

update_rubygems
and you are done!

Cheap iPhone from T-Mobile Austria

Are you kidding me? 9999 Euro ??? Besides this insane price, you couldn’t even order it, because you can only order up to a value of 1000 Euro.

Finally, SIP and Skype for the iPhone

Yes, it’s true SIP and Skype is available for the iPhone. You can install only SIP client on the iPhone, or you can install fring which not only supports sip but also Skype. Nice … very nice :)

Instruction for the SIP installation: http://lifehacker.com/378511/turn-your-ipod-touch-into-an-iphone
or the easiest way, fring: http://www.fring.com/blog/?p=226

IPCop out of the “box”

I bought a VIA mini ITX mainboard to make a new firewall, the old one with a Pentium1 166mhz was going a bit slow and since I also wanted to use VPN I needed something better. IPCop was installed quite fast, and a quick search brought me to this great howto. After setting up VPN I needed a client for Mac OS and I found “Tunnelblick“, quick installation and everything worked great. Now together with my mobile internet connection I can log in from everywhere and also be IMG_7694.JPGsecured :) Ok but what is it with the topic, out of the box? Well, usually this has some other meaning, but I really mean my IPCop works “out of the box”, I couldn’t find a case where I could fit it in so I just took a cardboard box :)

Welcome to the FONero world

fon
Today I received my FON router for 0 Euro :) quite a good price for a router with 2 Wireless interfaces. I will not start explaining what FON is all about, go to www.fon.com and read for your self!
Well I opened the package and goood the plastic they use has such a bad smell, it burns like acid in your nose, but … it's free
This was alas not the only problem I had. I could connect to my public SSID but not to the private one. After searching the FON forums a bit I found out that there seems to be some problems with Mac OS. The manual says the Private network is WPA with TKIP but this should cause no problems to my mac so the only way I could connect to the router to change settings was with my Palm since I have no windows pc anymore at home, thank good. Well anyway, I managed to connect with my palm and check the settings, the Private interface was set to WPA/WPA2 Mixed and encryption to mixed, after changing this to WPA and TKIP everything worked fine on my mac.

No DVD Shrink for Mac? Think again !

Thanks to the briliant crossover office, runing Windows application on a mac is no problem. One might say "wait, there is Paralelles and VMware" but … what do they cost, compared to crossover office? and … dvd shrink does NOT work with Paralleles, at least not "out of the box" and why wait till you start a virtual machine to rip a DVD ?
So move your but to the crossover office store and get yourself a licesnsed copy of Crossover Office, you won’t regret :)
I have first tested DVD Shrink 3.1 which after 50% crashed with "not enough memory" well 1.5 gb of RAM should be enough for something like DVD Shrink. But I must addmit I had quite a lot running and my iMac got quite slow during the process.
After installing DVD Shrink 3.2 and quittung some application ( firefox, camino, gallery remote, adium, mail, itunes, sofa control and some others ) DVD Shrink worked like a charm, fast, no crash and best of all, it could create a "backup" from an image I had on my HD. :)
